Breast Cancer can Strike Anyone at Any Age. Casey DeSantis is only 41-years-old and the mother of 3 children. 4-year-old Madison, 3-year-old Mason, and 18-month-old Mamie ~ the first baby born in the Governor’s Mansion in more than 50 years.
According to the CDC, 1–in-8 women living in the U.S. will develop some form of breast cancer during their lives.
One of the leading causes of death is women not getting mammograms or doing self-exams.
Mamograms should start at age 40 or earlier if you have a close family member who had breast cancer.
In the last 25 years, researchers have identified a wide variety of cancers that afflict the breast.
CyberKnife Miami’s Medical Director, Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Mark Pomper says, “While Getting the diagnosis is very tough, millions of women across the world, have fought and beat breast cancer. A vast majority of patients do very well and their lives are not shortened by it.”
He adds, “There are many types of breast cancer. Some grow more slowly and are easier to treat with a much better prognosis, while others are more aggressive. Treatment depends on how aggressive the cancer is and can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of them.”
No specific information was released about what type of breast cancer Mrs. DeSantis has or her treatment plan.
One of the newest, most effective and easiest treatments for breast cancer patients who are candidates for it, is CyberKnife Radiation Therapy. It can be done in 1-to-5 radiation sessions compared to 35 with other types of radiation. Plus it is very targeted therapy, hitting only the tumor site greatly reducing the risk of damage to surrounding healthy tissue or vital organs like the heart and lungs. Less radiation also means excellent cosmetic results.
As Florida’s First Lady, Casey DeSantis adopted mental health promotion as a signature issue. A positive mental attitude will help her greatly as she fights this battle.
