CyberKnife radiation therapy is an FDA approved Robotic Radio-surgery system designed to treat tumors almost any where in the body.
CyberKnife is a combination of a linear accelerator, mounted on a robotic arm, with an integrated guidance system. It features Synchrony® Respiratory Tracking, which permits the system to follow a tumor’s movement while a patient breathes naturally.
This means it targets only the tumors and greatly reduces the risk of damaging nearby healthy tissue, cells and organs.
The CyberKnife Advantage
Real-time images allow the CyberKnife system to track even the slightest tumor movement down to a single millimeter during treatment. With traditional radiation treatments, the beam is aimed at the tumor but it hits a wider area, including healthy surrounding tissue, which can result in negative side effects.
CyberKnife’s precise targeted beams also allows CyberKnife patients to be effectively treated usually in just 1-to-5 radiation sessions over 10 days, compared to traditional radiation therapy requiring 15-to-45 treatment sessions over several months.
Because CyberKnife requires fewer treatments there is much less disruption to your life. The recommended number of CyberKnife sessions will vary, depending on the size of the tumor, how many tumors you have and their location in the body.
Precision is why CyberKnife is so effective at treating cancer.
The system uses X-ray technology to pin-point the exact location of a tumor and then hundreds of radiation beams hit the target from many different angles. Destroying tumors, gradually disappearing over time.
By avoiding traditional surgery, patients are spared the risks of infection, excess bleeding, complications from anesthesia, and uncomfortable or painful recovery.
With CyberKnife, there are few, if any, side effects and virtually immediate return to normal activities as soon as treatment is over. Each session takes about 50 minutes.
Sometimes CyberKnife is used in conjunction with chemotherapy and if at all possible instead of chemo because the side effects. If any thing some patients report feeling a little tired and/or a bit nauseous after CyberKnife treatment but most report that it goes away quickly.
Compare that to the side effects of chemotherapy which most people know too well or have heard about even if they’ve never had cancer.
Scientifically & FDA Approved
First engineered in 1991 at Stanford University, The CyberKnife System was approved by the FDA for the treatment of malignant and benign tumors of the head, neck and upper spine in 1999, and for tumors anywhere else in the body since 2001.
Is CyberKnife safe?
CyberKnife does not present the same problems as traditional surgery. Anesthesia is not necessary and the risk of infection and hemorrhaging is eliminated.
CyberKnife is based on radiation technology that has been proven for more than 30 years. Thousands of patients have received CyberKnife treatments worldwide and numerous clinical studies showing its safety have been published in many peer-reviewed medical journals.
Science and the FDA back up the CyberKnife system’s ability to effectively treat cancer, almost any where a tumor is located.
