The Most Survivable Cancers: Understanding Long-Term Outcomes and Treatment Advances

Nobody wants to hear the words “You have cancer.”

The word “cancer” itself is scary for just about anyone.  But thanks to developments in treatments and earlier detection, more individuals diagnosed with cancer are surviving the disease.

With some cancers early detection is key.  With others, they might be easier to treat – even in later stages, and some cancers may respond to treatments better than others.

According to The American Cancer Society’s 2024 Annual Report, the most survivable cancers in the United States based on the five-year relative survival rates are breast cancer (with a 91% five-year relative survival rate), Hodgkin lymphoma (89%), melanoma (94%), prostate cancer (97%), thyroid cancer (99%) and cancer of the testis (95%).

The five-year relative survival rate, according to the National Cancer Institute, means the percentage of individuals, who are alive five years after being diagnosed with the disease.

It is calculated by dividing the percentage of patients with the disease who are still alive at the end of the period of time by the percentage of people in the general population of the same sex and age who are alive at the end of the same time period. The relative survival rate shows whether the disease shortens life,” the National Cancer Institute explains.

Breast Cancer Survivability

According to WebMD, breast cancer is more survivable because doctors understand the disease better, and screening can catch the cancer earlier, when it’s easier to treat. Treatments are also more specific.

Hodgkin Lymphoma Survivability

Hodgkin lymphoma responds well to radiation, and because of how it responds to treatment, survival rates are favorable according to Medical News Today.

Melanoma Survivability

Melanoma – or a form of skin cancer – has a higher survival rate because when it’s not in a difficult-to-see place on the body, it easy to detect. Early detection increases a person’s chance of survival. Annual screenings can help too.

Prostate Cancer Survivability

Prostate tumors tend to grow slowly, and screening often detects the disease. Seventy percent are caught while still localized, meaning it’s still contained in the prostate.  Again, when caught early and treated, patients have a better chance of surviving.

Thyroid Cancer Survivability

Thyroid cancers grow slowly.  When they are found 65% are localized, meaning contained in the thyroid, making it easier to treat, according to Healthline.

Testicular Cancer Survivability

When testicular cancer is caught early, doctors remove one or both testicles, which can lead to remission.  And even when the cancer is caught at a later stage, the cancer responds well to other treatments, including radiation and chemotherapy, according to WebMD.

Cancer is Cured?

Keep in mind, cure is a tricky word when it comes to cancer because its rare doctors can be 100% certain the cancer won’t return, according to the American Cancer Society.  However, when treatment is completed and the disease has gone away, doctors will say the cancer is in remission.  The longer the person is in remission, the better the chance it won’t return.

The National Cancer Institute reports if you remain cancer free for five or more years after treatments, some doctors may say a person is cured.

CyberKnife: Cancer Treatment Miami

If you or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, CyberKnife Miami is here for you.

CyberKnife Miami uses state-of-the-art, non-invasive, image guided radiosurgery treatments called stereotactic body radiation therapy or SBRT to treat cancer and other medical issues requiring radiation.

We treat spine, brain, breast, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver, prostate and head and neck tumors.  We also treat lymphoma and other conditions in the body where radiation treatment is necessary. And we treat even the most difficult cases.

CyberKnife’s missile guidance technology enables the SBRT to track a tumor’s movement in real time. The technology delivers radiation directly to the tumor, while leaving healthy surrounding tissue unharmed.  With CyberKnife, patients often need a shorter course of treatment than with traditional radiation because of SBRT is targeted radiation.
